Today I set up this stalemate position in a class (Black to play).: I asked the class why it was stalemate and not checkmate. I thought my moved SHOULD have resulted in a stalemate and not a checkmate. Recall that you should first check for check If the Black king is attacked (in check), you know that stalemate is not possible, and your choice becomes either checkmate or neither. Stalemate means the king is not in check and the player has no legal moves. But isn't that what happened? The black king was in check initially, but two moves had passed while black wasn't in check and the final move i made was so black king couldn't move. If the king is not in check and there are no legal moves on the board for the player on the move, it is stalemate. I analyzed the image and this is what I see. ![]() Checkmate is when the king can’t move and is in check and cant get out. The simple answer is, if the king in check and there is no way out of check (moving out of check, interposing between the king and the checking piece, or taking the checking piece), it is checkmate. Stalemate is when the no piece can move but the king is not in check. I am clearly new, but am i missing something? The game immediately states White Wins by Checkmate, but the black king wasn't in check for 2 moves beforehand. Chess, for one, is a game with a large set of rules, and mastering the game comes only through understanding all of them. The only difference is that since the King isnt threatened, the attacker cant. It is no surprise that games have different rules.
